Susan “Suzie” Shelby
Welcome! I’m glad that you are here and exploring options for support for whatever you are feeling or experiencing that might feel too big, too difficult, too much, or too painful to navigate alone. Or maybe you are feeling the desire to engage in a self discovery or a personal growth journey. I want to acknowledge the courage that it takes to listen to one’s inner stirrings and to reach out for support or to follow one’s unique path.
I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself. I have traveled a winding path to becoming a social worker. This path encompasses meaningful years engaged as an educator at The Texas School for the Deaf, as a Licensed Massage Therapist focusing on cancer, stress, and trauma as it’s stored in the body, and as a Counselor Intern in the Drug and Alcohol field. Each of these experiences helped lay the groundwork for my pursuit of social work by re-igniting my initial interest in counseling which stemmed from growing up in a family affected by cancer and feeling the aloneness of being with grief and loss.
This sense of being alone with difficult to digest emotions left a lasting impression of how essential it is to not be alone in one’s heart ache and emotional distress and has been a guiding light in my therapeutic orientation. I believe we each have the innate capacity to heal. I aim to create a warm, empathic, and safe environment within a
client-centered, collaborative framework where this potential to heal can take root, grow, and ultimately flourish. I have felt deeply moved by the privilege of being with clients as they navigate their challenges, whether it is a death or non - death loss, trauma, difficult emotions, or reclaiming their authentic selves. I draw from a mix of therapeutic approaches such as Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), Grief and Loss therapy, and Mindfulness.
My formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Pathology and Audiology from the The University of Denver, a Master of Science in Special Education from The University of Tennessee, and a Master of Social Work from Smith College School for Social Work. I am eager to meet you and explore what we can work on together!
